✨ Marriage Equality Act: New York passes the marriage equality act legalizing gay marriage.
✨The Mattachine Society: A gay rights group that staged a “sip-in” to protest the New York Liquor Authority’s prohibition on serving gay patrons in bars on the basis that they are “disorderly”. Subsequently, the New York commission declared they had a right to be served.
✨Obergfell V Hodges: The Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states.
✨ Stonewall: refers to the 3-day riot following an attempted police raid of a gay bar in Greenwich Village. This riot is largely credited with propelling the LGBT rights movement forward in the US.
✨ PRIDE: refers to the yearly pride parade celebrating the LGBT+ community and memorializing the rights movement to get to this point.
✨Matthew Shepard Act: expanded US discrimination laws to include crimes committed on the basis of the victims actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.
✨One Inc V Olesen: The Supreme Court ruled in favor of protecting the first amendment rights of a LGBT magazine after the US postal service and FBI had declared it ‘obscene material’. It was the first time the supreme court had ruled in favor of the LGBT community.
